LITS 1002 Poster Project

Now that your group project has been completed, do you think for you and/or your partner(s) the objectives (outlined in the given instructions with respect to acquisition of knowledge, fostering of cooperative skills, etcetera) were achieved?  Was it a worthwhile endeavour, and why or why not?

From my personal experience, I though that the group assignment was indeed beneficial as I was able to gain a more in-depth knowledge on the topics which my group presented, which previously I would have taken for granted. Also, having the opportunity to conduct the assignment as a pair proved successful as the integration of both our ideas, knowledge and overall co-operation led to a better understanding of the topics for both of us.

  2. Group projects are fun and I do enjoy them, however, as I've learned being at UWI, there are always issues of members not pulling their weight and this was the case I encountered with this project. Though it started as a pair assignment, another was linked to our group and I thought it be wonderful to have another and share the weight. Not so. Though one member tried to assist, clearly she was not giving of her best effort to brain storm and I found myself doing the research and designing the poster.
Needless to say, I had fun doing this as it challenged me to research the topic and even share my findings with non Literature students who grasped the concept and idea from the poster and explanation.
In terms of the learning objectives, it reinforced my ability to push for other dimensions of group work and pushed me to have the confidence and boldness to stand up and still present in the midst of other members who were not as prepared.
Regarding it being a worthwhile endeavor, it was, as it allowed the true self to be identified and a 'heads-up' for future projects.

  3. I personally think that group projects is stepping stone in learning how to work well and cooperate with others, who may not have the same personality and characteristics as yourself. It makes you become aware of the different people that surrounds you, and how it may take quality time for you to get to know and understand other people.
I have also acquired more meaningful information on the topic and was able to successfully pass on that information to my fellow classmates and also my tutor.

  4. It indeed was a worthwhile endeavour because through it I learned a lot, as my other classmates most likely did. There were a lot of new things that I learned in the class from my peers and through the research done for me and my partner's poster.
I learned how to actually create a poster which I now like to do and I learned that many of my classmates are very creative. I also learned a lot about the novel and I now have an even greater appreciation for it. I think that this assignment was a very good idea and I'm sure that many others-in my class and in others- have benefited greatly from it.

Each time i do a group project-it's a learning experience-whether i lead the group or follow-each time I learn to give a little more, give in a little more and basically open up a bit more to the whole experience. It's challenging at time but then again when is growth not?

  6. For me, it was a great opportunity to learn and explore the topics alot more. I believe I learned more by doing the poster presentation.
I learned not only from my group's presentation but from the other groups presentations as well. It made all the outlined topics very clear.
And of course working in groups is always good, you get to know your classmates a bit better and learning to work as a team is also very important.

  7. The group project was indeed a learning experience.
In addition to being able to work with new people, there was research needed to be done in order to complete the assignment. As such, I was able to learn certain things that I was not aware of previously, and in some cases, the research acted as as form of revision of things that I did know, but might have forgotten. The other groups' presentations also provided a wealth of information, which is proving to be beneficial as we delve deeper into the course material.

Personally, I hate group projects because of bad experiences on the past but what I loved about this one is the fact there Dr. skeete encourage and commanded a level of accountability. So there was no "piggy back riding". This is also a good means of having and developing responsibility. Additionally, one cannot go wrong with research.

I certainly do agree that the group project was a worthwhile endeavor in this particular instance. I know that many persons loathe the idea of group work and I must admit that I also do to some degree, however in this particular instance the members that comprised my group were all persons that took initiative just like myself. Therefore in this instance it truly was a rewarding experience. I think that the whole concept of a poster presentation is something so new and innovation. I have never done anything like this in my academic career at university and thus it was an enjoyable experience. The research that was done definitely widened my scope and allowed me to appreciate the novel as an art form in a different way. Overall I think that all the outlined objectives were coherently achieved.

  10. This group project was a success as it opened up my learning into areas of Literature that we ignore at times since we may not have to use it analysis for our novels etc. Doing the poster ave my partner and I a chance to do something completely different as neither one of us were equipped with graphic design. Dr. Skeete should be commended for such as excellent idea for a group project since it was something completely new and enticing for me. The experiance of working with my partner opened my eyes into new things and allowed me to learn a vast amount. It was a success.

  11. Before attempting this project I never took into consideration that a poster could have been used for a presentation. I knew about drama and the like but this was indeed a learning experience for me. My partner worked well and we finished on time. I was also glad to finally put my graphic design knowledge to use. I was nervous about the approach at first but after researching the topic I felt a lot more confident.

  12. By doing this project I was really opened to the vast classification of the novel. I usually do not enjoy working in groups mainly because people tend to not work but the people in my group were really great to work with. They are very hard working and talented and made this experience worthwhile. I appreciate learning from the other groups the different aspects of the novels and especially learning there was a difference between the story and the plot. Dr. Skeete kudos to you for a great assignment. Made me really like group work and helped in learning a whole lot more.

  13. There was some cooperation between myself and partner but I personally do not like group projects. In most cases people in group projects do not pull their weight but my partner did do a good deal of work so it turned out to be a good presentation. We both learned a great deal about our topic, (story and plot) and it was interesting to note the difference between them. We've never done a poster presentation before so this was new to us but it was different and I think I preferred than a powerpoint presentation as more creativity and thinking went into the poster, which made the presentation more fun.

  14. I do not think the poster assignment achieved it objectives. I was cool designing a poster but whatever was on the poster i could have learnt without having to do a poster. I did like that it was somthing different from just a powerpoint presentation though. Working with a group is not my favourite thing to do and this poster assignment did not change my dislike towards group assignments.

  15. I naturally loved the idea of having to make something as creativity is one of my strong point when it comes to an assignment and I think the objectives that was outlined was achieved by both me and my partner. Although i am a full-time student and my partner is a part-time student there where obstacles but we were able to get through them. This foster a bond and friendship that continued even after the project was completed which might not of existed if it wasn't for the project..this made it a worthwhile endeavor..:)

  16. The group poster served as a means of reinforcement for the areas covered in class. It was a worthwhile endeavour because I obtained a deeper understanding of the concepts. I agree with Ornette that it was a unique way of delivering a presentation without relying on power point. I also enjoyed the creative aspect and working with two great individuals who welcomed me into their group.

  17. I found the group project to be quite enlightening. When my team member and I got the topic "Character and Characterization", I was very excited since it was an area I felt comfortable with. Upon doing the research though, I was able to better understand the concept and even now, weeks after the presentation, I draw on the memory of our poster to assist in not only analysing Prose, but it has also aided in the various literary disciplines.
The group experience was also very rewarding and working with a friend made it easier to communicate (even the not so positive criticisms) and by extension, easier to achieve the objectives. What also helped us achieve our goals was understanding each other's strengths.

  18. To be honest, I did not benefit from this group project because my group had a lot of problems and I personally did not like the topic we got which was Spatio-temporal, Ideological & Psychological Perspective. Usually group projects are supposed to be people coming together and working together and sharing their ideas but none of this happened in my group. As a result, this changed my attitude towards future group presentations. Nevertheless, it was a great idea to use this poster presentation rather than just a usual power point.

  19. My partner and I presented on characters and characterization and we certainly benefited from the project. What was very interesting was finding creative ways of portraying some of the aspects of characters and characterization which was not exactly literal. We enjoyed working with each other and the work dynamics was superb.

  20. Our group certainly found it easy to work together on this project, we were able to do our individual and collaborative aspects of the project by communicating quite often with each other, despite our differing schedules. I would not hesitate to work with her again. Yes i found this project to be worthwhile.

  21. Through the group assignment I learnt to co operate, collaborate and interact with others. It was a great experience working with others as everyone in my group did their work in a timely manner. This assignment was quite efficient in exposing me to new terms and techniques utilized by authors. Also the assignment was worthwhile because it was not as strenuous and arduous as other assignments usually are.

  22. For the group assignment, my partner and I both had demanding schedules so it was difficult to meet. Thank God for technology though lol. So we shared acquired information and thoughts on the poster via emails and instant messaging. The assignment itself was very informative. Personally, it allowed me to gain in-depth knowledge about the topic of perspective that I never had before. All in all, I had my reservations about the poster presentations but I have come to reaalize that it's a very effective and creative way to share knowledge. I enjoyed the spark of creativity I had in creating the poster. Very proud of the end-result. As for working with my partner, I will gladly work with her again.

  23. Having read all of the comments above and seeing that people have been commenting on the advantages of the Poster Presentation Project and NO disadvantages, there comes a point where I must be quite candid in my own comment. In a nutshell, I agree with Ornette Henry's comment. I do not like group projects and this is one group project that did not benefit me in any manner whatsoever. I did not mind doing a poster but the fact that I am a full-time student who does not work and my parents cannot always exhaust their resources on me and NO estimated cost was outlined in the poster presentation instructions nor in a lecture to give me an idea of what cost to expect. (Is this not the very reason why I am seeking tertiary education? To secure a job and earn money so that I can pay my bills?) I must also state that my group lacked appropriate cohesiveness and cooperation. Basically I did not learn anything from the Poster Presentations and I believe that if Power Point Presentations was done I would have learnt more. In my opinion, I presume that an essay of some sort on either of the topics given to us in the Poster Presentations would have had a greater impact and appreciation for us in understanding the different aspects of Prose Fiction.

  24. By far, my most enjoyable assignment for the semester was the poster presentation. Usually group assignments pose the same issue; progress of the assignment is always decelerated when group members loaf of other members strength, or simply the lack of cooperation and communication between members result in slow production or a hurried project. This presentation however provided my group member and myself the opportunity to equally share the work load. Being more art and graphic oriented she took care of the poster while i managed the oral presentation. We consulted each other on every idea and decision and the project was completed without any contentions. I must however agree with a previous comment that the project did indeed incur an unexpected cost. Being a full time student, renting and paying overhead expenses, the poster did press my budget. I generally liked the idea but I think that some leeway should have been given to power point or soft copy posters.

  25. I personally do agree that group projects are interesting and worthwhile however at times it can be a bit tedious. The poster was a good idea since it gave us an opportunity to showcase our ideas in a meaningful way. I honestly had a horrible experience with this poster presentation, firstly it was costly since the people that made the poster made a mistake on it so they had to redo it and additionally charged us extra.Secondly, my father had to bring it up from south for me which inconvenienced him. I really didn't mind the poster presentation since it was a great idea however it had a few faults.

    1. Hey wait a minute...THEY made the mistake and charged YOU???? that's wrong and wicked so if I were you, I woulda walk out and not pay a DIME (normally you pay after the poster was printed) so you should have been able to walk out scot free! :P

  26. I had my apprehensions about both the project and my partner, but in the end we pulled through in a way that astonished me. I really enjoyed designing the poster, and while it was not my first, it was my first for printing. There were no egos in the way between my partner and myself and we aided each other for the betterment of the assignment. This was actually one of my better group projects during my entire UWI life.

  27. The Poster Presentation was a fantastic idea. It was quite original and authentic as I have never come across it prior to this course. It was quite a fun project and it will be a very useful teaching tool in the future. It really keeps you in check regarding what you know about a topic as you have limited space and a vast array of information. However, once you know your topic well enough it'll be a breeze. I would recommend the poster for future classes as it is not only fun but also prepares us for the classroom as teachers.

  28. i think the goals my group and i set out to achieve was achieved. we had very good comments in tutorial and many liked the style of our poster !!! this assignment helped me experience working with new people and developing my team skills. this presentation was rather simple and stress free compared to other presentation.

I think the poster presentation was good. My partner and I had the BEST time and we were on fire! However, it was expensive and inconvenienced me financially. It was a different way of doing an assignment which was nice and innovative but the information we learned in Poster Presentations, we could have learned it in another way so we did not "need" the posters. However, as a potential teacher, it will serve as a great teaching tool. Therefore, while this group poster project had its advantages ie learning from each other, designing and using innovative methods, it surely had its disadvantages such as FINANCIAL problems and for certain people (not me) group member issues.

Firstly, I despise group assignments. However, this poster presentation project was not at all depressing. I enjoyed creating different ways to represent simple information and also had fun sharing knowledge with others and learning new things myself.

Doing this poster presentation was indeed a new experience for me. I enjoyed working in my group and doing a poster presentation for the first time was an exciting one. I was glad to be able to learn new things and a new method of presentation.

  32. My problem was that I began late and I would like to believe miss out on most of the group work, however the little that I received was good and I think that it was wonderful to work with complete strangers and put your heads together, agree on ideas, and stand together as a team and do the presentation it was great.
    Iwould definitely do it again.

After the completion of the posters I have gained communication and cooperative skills and in my opinion it definitely was a worthwhile endeavor. The effort and teamwork certainly taught me that working with others in an academic setting can be entertaining as well as educational. It has fostered scholastic learning and social skills.
